In Term 3 students in Year 1/2 and 3/4 have been focusing their efforts on spoken Japanese through scripted role play. Scripted dialogue is a common element in Japanese culture particularly in the service industry. Students have enjoyed playing “shops” and “restaurants”, taking turns to act out the roles of service workers and customers. Students pair up to practise the dialogue with a partner, personalising the script with their own choice of item to “buy”. Some tricky words include “irashaimase!” (Welcome!) and “itadakimasu”(thank you for my food!). Students could then volunteer to perform for the class. We had a lot of fun and gained a lot of confidence with our spoken Japanese.
