Kingston Fire Brigade's 80th Anniversary Open Day
Dear Families,
It is hard to believe the term is almost over. It has been an absolute pleasure to continue to lead this school this term and share in the wonderful learning experiences over recent weeks. I feel incredibly proud of our students and the enthusiasm and dedication with which they have approached each day. Both staff and students have embraced all learning opportunities provided. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the wider Kingston community for completing the School Improvement Survey recently administered. These results will be analysed and planned for throughout Term 4 and into 2023. I look forward to sharing these with you.
On Wednesday we celebrated our Kingston Primary School Colour Blast Fun Run. The event had a spectacular turnout and raised nearly $5000 – funds that will go towards our school and students. Events like the Colour Blast Fun Run reinforce the overwhelming sense of community here at Kingston Primary School. It is fabulous to see the amazing smiles and laughter from every single student and adult. Our students fully embraced the event in their enthusiastic participation. Thank you to all who were able to attend, to the School Association and to our wonderful and generous sponsors and volunteers. A special thank you to Michelle Cockerell for her organisational brilliance, Bonnie Payne, Wendy Thomson and Claire Jones for going above and beyond all day to assist the team of parent volunteers that turned up bright and early to set up, and to Sam Dobson and Sarah Dance who were instrumental once again in organising the event. We see you and appreciate everything you do for our entire school community.
Maths Relay
A huge congratulations to our Kingston Primary School Maths Relay Team – Isaac D, Crayton W, Ibrahim A and Mehreen M for winning the Primary Division of the Maths Association of Tasmania State Mathematics. These amazing students finished on a perfect score of 200/200 with 4 minutes and 21 seconds remaining. A fantastic achievement for our fabulous students!
TMAG Young People's Reference Panel and Term Break Festivities
Congratulations to Lilly Oettle and Felix Jenkins who have been selected as representatives on the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery’s (TMAG) Young People's Reference Panel for 2022! The TMAG Young People’s Reference Panel is a select group of children that are interested in contributing to the work of the Museum through providing advice, feedback and recommendations. With only sixteen representatives selected, this is a huge achievement for both Lilly and Felix and it is very exciting to have two students from Kingston Primary be a part of this fantastic work. Felix and Lilly have been busily working on ‘Lift Off’, Tasmania’s only dedicated Annual Cultural Festival for children and young people. The 2022 Festival theme is ‘Spring’. Please find the link below to all the fun and festivities:

NAPLAN 2022
Congratulations to all Year 3 and 5 students for approaching and completing NAPLAN assessments this year with such enthusiasm, dedication and commitment. It was incredibly rewarding to see students' hard work showcased in our school's results this year. Compared to the Australian average and to schools similar to Kinston Primary we had a greater proportion of students who performed Above Standard or Well Above Standard for Writing, Reading, Spelling and Grammar and Punctuation. In Year 3 there was a similar situation, with Kingston also having a greater proportion of students who performed Above Standard or Well Above Standard for Writing, Reading, Grammar and Punctuation and Numeracy.
All Year 3 and 5 students have brought home an individual summary of their child’s progress as part of the NAPLAN assessment. It is important to note that these assessments are only a snapshot of student progress and the assessment that is planned for and actioned within classes gives a far clearer picture of students' successes and areas of further improvement. However please do not hesitate in contacting your child’s Teacher early in Term 4 should you have any questions or queries regarding this assessment.
SAVE THE DATE - Year 5/6 Camp
Year 5/6 camp is set to take place in November at The Lea. Students from 5/6 Leppard and 5/6 Stafford will leave school on Monday 14 November at 9.00 am and return on Tuesday 15 November by the end of the school day. 5/6 Clifford and 5/6 Munday will follow, leaving school on Thursday 17 November and returning on Friday 18 November ready to be collected at the end of the school day. The agenda for all two days of camp is busy and filled with lots of exciting activities. Please note there will be no cost for this camp.
I am sure our campers will come back extremely tired but happy. Thank you to our dedicated Year 5/6 Teachers as well as members of our Senior Team, for working tirelessly to ensure this camp will be an absolute success. More specific information around activities, camp essentials and Covid-19 considerations will be provided by the Year 5/6 Team early next term.
2023 Classes
At this time of the year we start planning for the next year class models, staffing and student allocations into classes. Teachers are inputting vitally important academic and social data to ensure we have the best placement for your child in 2023. In October we start creating our 2023 classes by allocating students. We do not accommodate requests for particular teachers, however if there is an educational reason for wanting your child in a particular class then please email me angela.crane@education.tas.gov.au before 18 October. We cannot always guarantee requests but will do our very best to accommodate each wish.
Pre-Kinder Sessions
In October we will be commencing Pre-Kinder sessions for those children who are enrolled for Kindergarten in 2023. These sessions are a fantastic opportunity to become part of our school community, to build strong friendships and partnerships before next year and where parents/carers will have the opportunity to spend time with their children engaging in learning through play. If you have a Kinder aged child for 2023 (a child turning five in 2023) it is vital that you grab an Enrolment Pack from the school office and return it to the office as soon as possible so we can secure your enrolment. We start allocating 2023 Kindergarten children into classes over the next few weeks and want to make sure we have included all of our current families who have siblings in older grades. If you have any questions around this process or your child’s placement for 2023 do not hesitate in contacting Miss Crane at school directly or via email – angela.crane@education.tas.gov.au.
Pre-Kinder sessions will take place on the following days between 1.45pm – 2.45pm:

Week 7 Tuesday 29 November (Mrs Jess Suffolk)
A Parent/Carer Expo and Information Session will be held on 6 December between 1.45pm – 2.45pm.

That’s all from me this week. It’s been great walking around the school and seeing our students so immersed in their learning, particularly as Term 3 draws to a close. As always, should you have any questions or queries about the school, please do not hesitate in contacting me. A special and sincere thanks to all staff, students and our entire Kingston community for the Term. I look forward to Term 4 and witnessing all that Kingston Primary will continue to achieve. Wishing everyone a safe and fabulous term break with family and friends.

Welcome to Japanese in the Year of the Tiger. Attention all students who turn 12 this year, “this is your year!”. As my zodiac sign is also “Tora Doshi”, I am proud to share the Tiger Year with you! Some of the attributes of people born in the Tiger Year are as follows: brave, adventurous, determined and sympathetic; tiger-year people also like to joke around and can be lucky with money! (お金OKANE= money; 円=YEN).
The Japanese word for tiger is “Tora”. Students have also been learning to write とら(Tora) in Japanese script.
This year, Japanese at Kingston Primary School has been extended in the school with students now starting the program in Grades 3 and 4. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to achieve a very good understanding of Japanese language and culture into Grades 5 and 6. Durno Sensei is teaching Grades 5 and 6 and I am taking the Grade 3 and 4 classes. In Grades 3 and 4, students have been learning greetings; how to say their names and how to count to 100. Students have also been making and decorating origami tiger faces for “The Year of the Tiger”.
Students have also been learning about aspects of Japanese culture. Grade 3/ 4 students have watched an “anime” called “Ponyo”; they have learnt about a Japanese festival called “Kodomo no Hi” (Children’s Day). In Japan on 5 May each year, large kites in the shape of carp are hoisted up flag poles in backyards, schools, council buildings and over rivers. In Japanese, carp are called “Koi” and the carp kites are called “Koinobori”. “Koi” represent courage and strength as they can swim upstream against the current. On 5 May, parents pray that their children will grow up to be strong and brave like “Koi”.

Wahoo – what fun it is to have a Colour Fun Run, especially with the addition of the obstacle course. The Free BBQ, Free Dress and Wacky Hair created a next level school wide event!
It was great to see students laughing, smiling, shrieking, walking, and jogging around our course. This is a great way to foster positive relationships and build social connections for students and staff. We were told, “Best Day Ever!” by many students, and we could not agree more!
The children have been working hard in class to produce a piece of art that you can have put onto a calendar, notebook, sketchbook, diary, tea towel, tote bag, pillowcase, or set of greeting cards. A display has been set up near the front office with samples of products so that you can have a look and feel, to help you decide what you would like to purchase.
You can order items:
- Online using the website crazycamel.com.au/38743
- Using the QR code located on the order form
- Or you can return the completed order form to school with the correct cash. Parents and carers are welcome to drop this to the office yourself, if you are worried about sending large amounts of cash via your child.
Orders close Friday 4 November (end of Week 3 of Term 4).
If you have any questions or queries, we are happy to help. Please contact us on kingstonPSfundraising@gmail.com

Get In the Recycling Loop - Wacky Recycling Contraption Comes to Channel Court Shopping Centre
In the Loop is coming to Channel Court Shopping Centre, demonstrating to kids and parents alike how to recycle in a colourful, creative and dynamic way, transforming a household chore into a captivating and interactive experience.
At In the Loop, visitors will discover five unique educational stations with recycling games, interactive displays, repurposed sculptures, and a first-of-its-kind plastic repurposing machine where attendees can watch recycled plastic transform into fun new objects right before their eyes.
Every half-hour, visitors will also get to see the Recycling Rube Goldberg machine in action, with the mega-mousetrap style contraption providing fun for all ages.
Named after American cartoonist Rube Goldberg, the machine performs the simple task of recycling in an overly complicated, visually exciting way. The action of each movement triggers the initiation of the next, giving a quirky, unique demonstration of how recycling can be achieved.
Built entirely from materials found in a scrap yard, the Recycling Rube Goldberg provides a great example of a fun and unique way to repurpose household junk.
Each activation station has been constructed out of bright, bold, recycled materials, with informational posters about Australia’s waste production and recycling systems, and encouraging attendees be part of the solution.
The event is providing more than just a fun, educational day-brightener for local families. In the Loop is working to re-connect shopping centres with customers, inviting them back into stores and, in-so-doing, reducing the amount of packaging waste that goes to landfill when shoppers opt to purchase online. The return to in-centre shopping will play a small but important part in addressing Australia’s waste problems.
Recycling is a topic that Australians are passionate but under-educated about, with 89% of Australians agreeing that recycling is important, but 50% of us still putting soft plastics in the kerbside recycling bins. In the Loop looks to solve this issue by targeting the next generation and making them the recycling heroes and teachers. By encouraging kids to take the lead and educate their parents, friends and relatives, In the Loop looks to change the recycling habits of the entire community.
In the Loop will be running from 9am-5pm on 26-30 October at Channel Court Shopping Centre.
The 2022 Tasmanian All Schools Track and Field Championships will be held at Hobart’s Domain Athletics Centre on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 October 2022.
